What is a fin seal pouch?

Fin seal pouches are packaging bags with simple bottom and back seals.

Fin Seal Pouch

What industries can fin seal pouches be used in?

Generally, the food industry is a huge market.

For fin seal pouches specifically, this food market can be expanded into the dry, inflatable, confectionary, and miscellaneous foods.

Dry foods include nuts, cookies, various snacks.

Inflatable foods mainly mean chips.

Confectionary foods encompass gummies, chocolate, gum, and various hard candy.

Other types of food include noodles, teas, powder sauces, and spices.

Sometimes, fin seal pouches are also used to package toys and a lot of other products.

Another surprising application is packaging magazines, collector cards, and promotional material!

If you are wondering whether fin seal pouches are right for your business, please contact us!

For more details, you can also check out specific pouch applications, such as coffee pouches.

The material used for fin seals depends on the type of food in question.

To learn more, see the “Materials” table at the top of this page.

Also, you can scroll down to a question about materials.

What do pouches protect the food against?

As the image shows, packaging protects not from dust, dirt, or theft, but from other – microscopic – things.

For one, good packaging has to be air-tight, so that enticing food aromas stay inside while keeping oxygen outside.

Oxygen is a natural catalyst, increasing the rate at which products spoil.

Thus, to keep food fresh, oxygen needs to stay out.

Even with candy, oxygen can dry them out, leaving behind a sticky mess.

Another important thing is to keep various contaminants out.

These may include dust, industrial chemicals, bacteria, fungi, metals, and other toxins.

Carbon dioxide is good to keep inside the package since it dilutes and reduces the amount of oxygen, thus, preserving food.

Finally, some pouches can shield against UV rays, which also may reduce the shelf life of your products.

Make sure you know what your products need protection from and contact the TED team for a consultation!

Fin Seal Pouch

What are some types of packaging pouches?

Besides a fin pouch, there is also a center-seal pouch, a T-seal pouch, a pillow pouch, and a lay-flat pouch.

Despite the different names, they are all synonyms.

Additional pouch types include doy-style, pirouette, block, easypack, corner-creased, quad-seal, gusseted, flat-bottom, brick, and expander.

There are also an array of stand-up bags with valves or without, as shown on the bottom of the image.

Various custom shaped bags also exist, so you are welcome to send in a design.

Each of these has a purpose and house different products, as shown on the image.

Doy-style bags are designed to stand upright, and are considered stylish and popular.

Usually, coffee, cookies, and pet food are put in these bags.

Pirouette bags have an interesting look.

Their shape is narrow at the base and wide at the top, looking like a funnel.

This is also a stand-up sealed bag for hard candy.

Block bags are great for coffee and grains.

They offer a good volume and are easy to display.

Easypack bags have a convenient and reusable opening.

They are used to package bigger items like pizza.

Corner-creased and quad-seal pouches are quite similar, except quad-seal bags join side gussets and panels with 4 instead of 2 seals.

Corner-creased bags can be used for bigger snacks like cookies, while quad-seal bags are popular for coffee.

Gusseted bags could have any type of gusset: side or bottom.

These bags are great for biscuits or anything else that is somewhat heavy and needs support from the bottom.

Flat-bottom bags are used for heavy products as well.

They have a lot of volumes and are easy to pack into.

This type is popular with pet food.

Brick bags are even more heavy-duty.

Their shape allows for the optimal usage of space and volume.

Thus, they are great to store grain and flour in.

Pillow bags go well with fin seals.

They are the most used, cheapest, and simplest.

They are used in a variety of food industries.

Expander bags are similar in shape to pirouette bags, but have additional longitudinal and top seals.

Are there different types of pillow bags?

There are 6 main ways you can go about pillow bags

You can have a symmetrical vertical seam or an asymmetrical vertical seam.

When choosing which one, think about where and how you want your customers to get access to your product.

types of pillow bags

If it is something big that people would eat right from the bag, like chips, then the symmetrical seam is good.

If it is something small, something that people are likely to pour out, then the asymmetrical seam is good.

There are also pillow bags with different hanging holes – eurohole or a round hole.

These allow your pouch to be hung on racks for display.

Whether you choose a round hole or a eurohole is up to you since they only differ in looks, not purpose.

A round hole looks more minimalistic and simple, while a eurohole looks more stylish.

hanging hole

Some pillow bags can also come with a zip.

This allows your customers to reuse, close, and open the bag easily and conveniently.

If your food product is something that won’t be consumed in one sitting, a zip is great.

zipper closure

Finally, pillows bags can be linked together into a chainbag.

This is useful if you expect your product to be bought in bulk.

Also, if your pouches are small, you can link a few together, letting your customers buy that.

What are some opening designs for fin seal pouches?

There are 3 main tear notch designs: vertical, horizontal, and a pouring nozzle.

A vertical tear notch is similar to the asymmetrical seam (scroll up).

Both of them are good if your products are such that people are likely to pour them out in a bowl instead of eating right from the bag.

This works with smaller snacks.

A horizontal tear notch is similar in use to the symmetrical seam.

It is great if your products are big and likely to be eaten in one sitting right from the bag, like chips.

A pouring nozzle will have a similar effect as a vertical tear notch.

However, it is good if your products are really small, like tiny candy, powders, or even loose leaf tea.

Basically, something that will be partitioned into small portions over time.

opening designs for fin seal pouches

Are there options to make a fin seal pouch reusable?

You can request a zip, as mentioned above.

Another option is a pouch that can be taped together.

This type has a strip with an adhesive on one side of the film, which will seal the bag when a user overlaps the pouch.

Such a solution could be great for a big pouch of candy or some other snack.

Fin Seal Pouch

A tin tie is yet another option you can have with fin seal pouches.

Tin ties are good for bags that house coffee or loose-leaf tea.

Basically, the material at the top of the bag is rolled and has a metal strip in it.

The user can employ this strip to tie the top closed or roll it closed.

What is the difference between a fin seal and a lap seal?

A fin seal is also known as a fold-over seam.

This is when two internal edges of the material are sealed together and folded over.

A lap seal, also known as the overlap seam, has an exterior edge sealed with the interior one.

Choosing the right type of seal depends on the material used.

A lap seal uses less material, so it is more economical.

However, it only works if both the outside and the inside materials are sealable.

This is possible if the material used is polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP).

A fin seal is used when the sealing medium is on the inside of the material, making it more versatile and usable with more materials than the lap seal.

What are the benefits of using fin seal pouches?

First of all, fin seal pouches are cheap, making them great for a startup business.

They are also cheap and easy to ship.

Unsurprisingly, they are quick to make, and you can order a very large amount at once.

Fin seal, or pillow, pouches are lightweight, easy to open, and catchy to the eyes, and voluminous, bringing success to your business.

What makes them catchy is their huge printing area and the volume of product you can put there.

What is a gusset?

A gusset is a triangular piece of material used to broaden a pouch so it stands on its own.

Gussets can be on the bottom or the sides of a pouch.

Gusset bag

What are the drawbacks of using fin seal pouches?

Compared to some other types of seals, the fin seal is not as strong and puncture-proof.

Also, despite being economical, fin seals do use more material than lap seals.

Fin seal pouches also have a relatively short shelf life of 9-12 months.

However, if you have a small family business, this may be a problem.

Finally, many business owners don’t prefer fin seal pouches anymore.

They order film rolls and package everything themselves.

While it is cheaper and faster, if you are a novice, fin seal pouches that are ready to go are easier for you to start off of.

What different fin seal pouches does TED Packaging make?

TED Packaging makes fin seal pouches with side gussets.

We also make foil pouches, brown paper pouches, easy-to-tear pouches, pouches for wipes, pouches for medical prescriptions, and heavy-duty pouches made to house 5 kilograms of product.

What are some additional design options and features for fin seal pouches?

You can request a zip to make your pouches reusable.

You can also add a valve for that same purpose.

Valves are usually used to dispense liquid or paste products, although, some powders will also work.

Another use for valves/vents is to strategically place them such that consumers can smell the aroma of the product to be convinced to buy it.

Another option is whether or not you want a clear window, so the consumer sees what the product actually looks like.

This is a great design option.

You can also request some type of a tear notch, an ergonomic handle, and a punch hole – euro or round.

ergonomic handle and a punch hole

Finally, you are free to choose the finish of the packaging – matte or glossy or a combination of both.

Matte finishes make your packaging look unique and interesting, as well as your label will be more visible.

Glossy finishes make your package look shiny and automatically grab the attention of your customers.

What typical shelf life do fin seal pouches provide?

Fin seal pouches normally have 9-12 months of shelf life.

However, if you request a metalized PET material, you can prolong the shelf life to 15-18 months.

This range also depends on how good the seal is.

What materials are used in fin seal pouches?

We provide a wide array of custom laminating materials that answer to your specific needs.

For fin seal pouches, we tend to use the following materials.

BOPP is highly heat-resistant, which is why it is often used for surface printing.

It can be used for simple 2-layer fin seal pouch.

It can be used to laminate other surfaces.

PET is a lightweight, transparent, and strong material that is great for moisture control.

Metalized PET can be included to prolong shelf life.

PP is the most popular material for fin seal pouches.

It is a commodity plastic with the lowest density.

PE is a non-toxic and flexible plastic that is used to strong seals.

It is also the most common plastic.

PETAL is PET with aluminum, which is metalized PET.

Kraft paper is brown paper material.

It is resistance to punctures; it is also easy to print on.

Finally, it gives a stylish look to the packaging.

LLDPE is a flexible, puncture-resistant, and does not let any chemicals through.

It is used to increase safety and heat-sealing in pouches.

CPP is a popular material for fin seal pouches.

It has high resistance to heat and punctures.

VMCPP is metalized CPP that adds to the looks of the pouch, strengthens it, and is cost-effective.

How do you manufacture fin seal pouches?

Most fin seal pouches are made with 2 or 3 layers of clear or foil material.

The film is stretched on rolls.

Then it is formed into a tube; the sides are sealed together into a fin seal or a lap seal.

Finally, the bottom and top of the tube part are sealed to create a perfect pouch.

If you would like to learn more about manufacturing, machines that are used, and various other technical details, check out this report.

What is the difference between metalized pouches and foil fin seal pouches?

The material depends on what industry you are working with.

Foils, especially aluminum foil, has great air-tightness; it is lightweight, recyclable, and versatile.

It preserves freshness and aroma quite well.

However, in contact with acidic, alkaline, and salty foods, a toxic chemical reaction may take place.

Thus, using foil to package fruit, for example, is not the best.

Metalized pouches still generally have aluminum, but as an overspray.

Thus, metalized pouches are not as gas-tight, but they are more flexible, tear-resistant, and lighter.

Metalized pouches also don’t produce chemical reactions with the food as aluminum fails can.

Finally, they are shinier, which makes them more eye-catching and attractive.

Aluminum foil and metalized pouches. The shinier ones are metalized

Why is printing area important?

Nowadays, consumers choose products based on QQAA, or Quantity, Quality, Affordability, and Attractiveness.

People like big and bright prints, so if your packaging pouch has a lot of printing space, you can develop a catchier design, and it will be easier to do since you have a lot of area to work with.

This is why fin seal pouches are great.

What does rotogravure mean?

Rotogravure, or simply gravure, is a method of printing an image by etching it on a metal plate and filling it with ink.

Then, this metal plate transfers the image into other materials, such as those used in fin seal pouches.

This printing method is the most used for fin seal pouches.

What are other printing alternatives?

Some other printing methods include hot stamp printing, screen printing, lithography, flexography, and digital printing.

Hot stamp printing is used for small orders, such as promotion.

It is also quick.

This method involves having dry ink or foil be pressed onto the packaging.

This option is non-polluting since the inks dry.

Screen printing is a method where ink is pushed into a mesh medium, which then transfers it on the packaging.

This method allows for a maximum of three colors, each of which is put on the packaging one by one.

Thus, this is a somewhat limiting method, but it is also cheaper.

Screen printing

Lithography is a method that uses an aluminum plate on which ink is transferred.

This ink is then put onto a rubber medium, and finally on your packaging.

This method is more expensive and requires a flat surface, so it may not be the best for fin seal pouches.

Flexography is more versatile and cheaper than lithography.

It uses quickly drying inks, and the process is like letterpress, only much faster.

It is usually printed on non-porous packaging, like the one used in the food industry.

Finally, digital printing uses big laser and inkjet printers.

This method is expensive, but it has a fast turnaround time and versatility.

How do I draw the printing design?

Every bag shape has its dimensions and perks, but below is an example of the layout for a pillow bag.

It is important to note that you or your designer/artist has the entire area to work with.

After you have an idea and a sketch, feel free to send it to us and our designers will consult you!

How eco-friendly are your fin seal pouches?

Flexible packaging, such as different fin seal pouches are generally more eco-friendly than other packaging.

Firstly, manufacturing such pouches consumes less heat and energy.

This translates to lesser greenhouse gas emissions.

These products are also lightweight, so less fuel could be burned during transport, which also lowers costs.

Finally, many of these pouches are reusable and recyclable.

If you request it, we can use recyclable materials for your packaging.

How can I be sure that TED Packaging fin seal pouches are safe?

All materials we use are 100% FDA approved and are BPA-free, so you can be sure in the safety of your products.

How expensive is to ship fin seal pouches to the US?

We will tell you the estimated cost once you send us your quote!

Do you test your fin seal pouches for quality?

Certainly! Pouches are randomly tested for quality.

Some tests include compression test, tensile test, compatibility test, and drop test.

Compression test assesses how much pressure can the seals withstand for various lengths of time.

Tensile test checks how much force can the seal film withstand until it breaks.

Compatibility test assesses how materials behave with different products and chemicals.

Drop test checks whether a fin seal pouch is able to withstand a fall without puncturing.

There are more tests that we do to make sure the quality of our fin seal pouches are premium.

You are welcome to learn more about the tests, as well as contact us!

Fin seal pouch is everywhere in the supermarket or small chain store. Whether in 7/11, Family Mart or Murphy, it is easy to identify based on the way it hangs on the shelf, easy to grab and has bright and eye-catching colors.

Fin seal pouch is extremely cheap and costs saving. Its shelf life is not very long, normally 9-12 months.

It is made with simple and thin material of two layers BOPP laminated Metallized CPP or PE, while for three layers, one PET is added.

Metallized PET material is also placed on the inside to make it thicker, prolonging the shelf life up to 15-18 months. This also depends on the strength of the seal.

Fin Seal Pouch with window

Basically, with the fin seal pouch, it is easier to add euro hole or a round hole, saw-tooth edge on the top of the bag. We can produce it with or without a transparent window if needed.

We normally supply the fin seal pouch with intact back and bottom seal, the top side is left open for our clients to fill products inside and then use a sealer for the seal.

fin seal pouch Intercon Pack

The material used for producing fin seal pouch is also the most common material PP. The only difference is that we use BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) in the surface for printing.

By using our 10 color rotogravure printing machine, we can use ink print for any colorful image, text or logo on the opposite side of the material.

You cannot erase it on the surface, then laminated with CPP (cast polypropylene) or aluminum coating CPP. We call it metalized CPP or VMCPP as sealing layer and then using our bag-making pouches to make fin seal pouches.

Sometimes for better barrier properties, the light barrier or smell proof or shelf life, we use PET (Polyethylene) as the first layer and then add one aluminum coating PET.

We call it metalized PET or Aluminum in the middle and then laminated with CPP or PE (polyethylene) for heat seal. We customize depending on your choice.

Fin Seal Pouch for Halloween

Fin seal pouch is a simple pouch for low added value products. It is commonly used for snacks or candy as we have mentioned above for one dollar cost or low price products.

If you compare this pouch with a 3 side seal pouch, the sealing strength and puncture resistance are not good enough, the others are almost the same.

It can not be used for vacuum purposes as the cross heat seal zone is easy to break and if the pouches have air leakage which starts there.

More and more customers now prefer roll stock and flexible packaging film instead of fin seal pouch. But if you are a start-up company or family business only with very few products, it is not advisable to put it into a machine.

Buying bulk fin seal pouches will be a good choice. Using bottle or jars is cheaper and transportation costs only 1/5 or less when you compare to fin seal pouches. Other rigid packaging creates less Co2 as well in producing a fin seal pouch.

Contact us now and start your business by buying fin seal pouches from Intercon Pack.
