Fin Seal Pouch is the simplest pouch with a back and bottom seal.

It can be made with fin seal on one side or lap seal, also called it Center Seal pouch or T-seal pouch, Pillow Pouch, Lay-flat Pouches. The Fin seal pouch is normally used for packing potato chips and fried snack foods

It is also used in packaging hard candies, gummy, instant noodles, and frozen dumplings. Common in the supermarket shelves is the packing Lay’s or chips as well as colorful gummy and candy grain.

Some fin seal pouch packing chips are filled with nitrogen gas inside making the fin seal pouches to look large and full, but in actual sense, the pouch is only filled with small quantities of products inside.

What do pouches protect the food against?

What are some types of packaging pouches?

Despite the different names, they are all synonyms.

Corner-creased and quad-seal pouches are quite similar, except quad-seal bags join side gussets and panels with 4 instead of 2 seals.

Gusseted bags could have any type of gusset: side or bottom.

Are there different types of pillow bags?

There are 6 main ways you can go about pillow bags

You can have a symmetrical vertical seam or an asymmetrical vertical seam.

When choosing which one, think about where and how you want your customers to get access to your product.

If it is something big that people would eat right from the bag, like chips, then the symmetrical seam is good.

If it is something small, something that people are likely to pour out, then the asymmetrical seam is good.

There are also pillow bags with different hanging holes – eurohole or a round hole.

These allow your pouch to be hung on racks for display.

Whether you choose a round hole or a eurohole is up to you since they only differ in looks, not purpose.

A round hole looks more minimalistic and simple, while a eurohole looks more stylish.

Some pillow bags can also come with a zip.

This allows your customers to reuse, close, and open the bag easily and conveniently.

If your food product is something that won’t be consumed in one sitting, a zip is great.

Finally, pillows bags can be linked together into a chainbag.

What are some opening designs for fin seal pouches?

There are 3 main tear notch designs: vertical, horizontal, and a pouring nozzle.

A vertical tear notch is similar to the asymmetrical seam (scroll up).

Both of them are good if your products are such that people are likely to pour them out in a bowl instead of eating right from the bag.

This works with smaller snacks.

A horizontal tear notch is similar in use to the symmetrical seam.

It is great if your products are big and likely to be eaten in one sitting right from the bag, like chips.

A pouring nozzle will have a similar effect as a vertical tear notch.

However, it is good if your products are really small, like tiny candy, powders, or even loose leaf tea.

Basically, something that will be partitioned into small portions over time.

Are there options to make a fin seal pouch reusable?

You can request a zip, as mentioned above.

Another option is a pouch that can be taped together.

This type has a strip with an adhesive on one side of the film, which will seal the bag when a user overlaps the pouch.

Such a solution could be great for a big pouch of candy or some other snack.

A tin tie is yet another option you can have with fin seal pouches.

Tin ties are good for bags that house coffee or loose-leaf tea.

Basically, the material at the top of the bag is rolled and has a metal strip in it.

The user can employ this strip to tie the top closed or roll it closed.

What is the difference between a fin seal and a lap seal?

A fin seal is also known as a fold-over seam.

This is when two internal edges of the material are sealed together and folded over.

A lap seal, also known as the overlap seam, has an exterior edge sealed with the interior one.

Choosing the right type of seal depends on the material used.

A lap seal uses less material, so it is more economical.

However, it only works if both the outside and the inside materials are sealable.

This is possible if the material used is polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP).

A fin seal is used when the sealing medium is on the inside of the material, making it more versatile and usable with more materials than the lap seal.

What are the benefits of using fin seal pouches?

They are also cheap and easy to ship.

What are some additional design options and features for fin seal pouches?

You can request a zip to make your pouches reusable.

You can also add a valve for that same purpose.

Valves are usually used to dispense liquid or paste products, although, some powders will also work.

Another use for valves/vents is to strategically place them such that consumers can smell the aroma of the product to be convinced to buy it.

How do you manufacture fin seal pouches?

Most fin seal pouches are made with 2 or 3 layers of clear or foil material.

The film is stretched on rolls.

Then it is formed into a tube; the sides are sealed together into a fin seal or a lap seal.

Finally, the bottom and top of the tube part are sealed to create a perfect pouch.

What is the difference between metalized pouches and foil fin seal pouches?

The material depends on what industry you are working with.

Foils, especially aluminum foil, has great air-tightness; it is lightweight, recyclable, and versatile.

It preserves freshness and aroma quite well.

However, in contact with acidic, alkaline, and salty foods, a toxic chemical reaction may take place.

Thus, using foil to package fruit, for example, is not the best.

Metalized pouches still generally have aluminum, but as an overspray.

Thus, metalized pouches are not as gas-tight, but they are more flexible, tear-resistant, and lighter.

Metalized pouches also don’t produce chemical reactions with the food as aluminum fails can.

Finally, they are shinier, which makes them more eye-catching and attractive.

Why is printing area important?

Nowadays, consumers choose products based on QQAA, or Quantity, Quality, Affordability, and Attractiveness.

People like big and bright prints, so if your packaging pouch has a lot of printing space, you can develop a catchier design, and it will be easier to do since you have a lot of area to work with.

This is why fin seal pouches are great.

What does rotogravure mean?

Rotogravure, or simply gravure, is a method of printing an image by etching it on a metal plate and filling it with ink.

Then, this metal plate transfers the image into other materials, such as those used in fin seal pouches.

This printing method is the most used for fin seal pouches.

What are other printing alternatives?

Some other printing methods include hot stamp printing, screen printing, lithography, flexography, and digital printing.

Hot stamp printing is used for small orders, such as promotion.

It is also quick.

This method involves having dry ink or foil be pressed onto the packaging.

Screen printing is a method where ink is pushed into a mesh medium, which then transfers it on the packaging.

This ink is then put onto a rubber medium, and finally on your packaging.

Flexography is more versatile and cheaper than lithography.

It uses quickly drying inks, and the process is like letterpress, only much faster.

It is usually printed on non-porous packaging, like the one used in the food industry.

Finally, digital printing uses big laser and inkjet printers.

This method is expensive, but it has a fast turnaround time and versatility.

How do I draw the printing design?

How eco-friendly are your fin seal pouches?

Certainly! Pouches are randomly tested for quality.

Some tests include compression test, tensile test, compatibility test, and drop test.

Compression test assesses how much pressure can the seals withstand for various lengths of time.

Tensile test checks how much force can the seal film withstand until it breaks.

Compatibility test assesses how materials behave with different products and chemicals.

Drop test checks whether a fin seal pouch is able to withstand a fall without puncturing.

Fin seal pouch is everywhere in the supermarket or small chain store. Whether in 7/11, Family Mart or Murphy, it is easy to identify based on the way it hangs on the shelf, easy to grab and has bright and eye-catching colors.

Fin seal pouch is extremely cheap and costs saving. Its shelf life is not very long, normally 9-12 months.

It is made with simple and thin material of two layers BOPP laminated Metallized CPP or PE, while for three layers, one PET is added.

Metallized PET material is also placed on the inside to make it thicker, prolonging the shelf life up to 15-18 months. This also depends on the strength of the seal.

Basically, with the fin seal pouch, it is easier to add euro hole or a round hole, saw-tooth edge on the top of the bag. We can produce it with or without a transparent window if needed.

We normally supply the fin seal pouch with intact back and bottom seal, the top side is left open for our clients to fill products inside and then use a sealer for the seal.

The material used for producing fin seal pouch is also the most common material PP. The only difference is that we use BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) in the surface for printing.

By using our 10 color rotogravure printing machine, we can use ink print for any colorful image, text or logo on the opposite side of the material.

You cannot erase it on the surface, then laminated with CPP (cast polypropylene) or aluminum coating CPP. We call it metalized CPP or VMCPP as sealing layer and then using our bag-making pouches to make fin seal pouches.

Sometimes for better barrier properties, the light barrier or smell proof or shelf life, we use PET (Polyethylene) as the first layer and then add one aluminum coating PET.

We call it metalized PET or Aluminum in the middle and then laminated with CPP or PE (polyethylene) for heat seal. We customize depending on your choice.

Fin seal pouch is a simple pouch for low added value products. It is commonly used for snacks or candy as we have mentioned above for one dollar cost or low price products.

If you compare this pouch with a 3 side seal pouch, the sealing strength and puncture resistance are not good enough, the others are almost the same.

It can not be used for vacuum purposes as the cross heat seal zone is easy to break and if the pouches have air leakage which starts there.

More and more customers now prefer roll stock and flexible packaging film instead of fin seal pouch. But if you are a start-up company or family business only with very few products, it is not advisable to put it into a machine.

Buying bulk fin seal pouches will be a good choice. Using bottle or jars is cheaper and transportation costs only 1/5 or less when you compare to fin seal pouches. Other rigid packaging creates less Co2 as well in producing a fin seal pouch.
